Pop into any gym, and it’s a sure bet that at least one woman will be wearing activewear from Lorna Jane. But for more than two decades, the brand’s founder and namesake Lorna Jane Clarkson has been on a mission that’s about more than just dressing us well for spin class: to encourage all of us be more active.
Ahead of Active Nation Day this Sunday September 25, a day to highlight the importance of moving more and to enjoy doing so, we caught up with Lorna Jane to find out how she lives her happiest, healthiest life.
On staying active 40+
“I think it’s important for all women. If you’re coming out of that time when your children are small and you haven’t had time for yourself, this is a good time to start getting yourself back on track, especially before you get into your 50s like myself! Know that there will be times when you are busier and that you can only play with the kids or go for a walk around the park, but all the small things every day count.”
Supporting others to stay active
“People think they need a lot of time to be fit and healthy and you don’t, it’s just a mindset. If you can find someone, a girlfriend, or I work out with my mother a lot - she’s super cool and in her 70s -, if you can find someone who will meet you for a walk or go to that spin class with you, if you have a ‘sister of support’ it can make it easier because you hold each other responsible.”
Quality Sleep
“I get up quite early, so I’m in bed by 9.30pm, 10pm. I have dinner early and I read most nights in bed; it really helps me relax. I have usually three or four books going at a time. I have Oprah’s book, What I Know For Sure, at the moment, so if I’m feeling I want to have a chat with Oprah, I’ll read that. I try to do all the right things to help my body sleep, so no electronics in the bedroom, the room is completely dark and I don’t have caffeine after lunch.”
Her go-to meal that’s sure to impress
“A restaurant! No, I do a great barbecue salmon with a miso salad and I love roast veg so I’ll always throw those in. But mostly when I have people over it’s actually for breakfast. Yoghurt and homemade muesli and juices, a smorgasbord of that kind of thing, and then my husband, typical Aussie, starts doing the eggs and bacon on the barbecue!”
Coffee or wine?
“Coffee absolutely! A long black. I don’t drink - maybe that’s my secret! If I went to a celebration and someone gave me a glass of champagne I’d have a sip, but I never really drink.”
