You've finally booked a night out with your partner, away from life's daily responsibilities and worries... So, what do you need to make it a great date? A fabulous outfit — check. Gorgeous-yet-comfy shoes to match — check. Hair styled to the nines — check.

Makeup? Let's work on that together.

Here are 4 tips to help your makeup look its very best on date night:

Start With Exfoliator

Wearing makeup can do a number on your skin, especially if you don't remove it properly or are wearing the wrong type of makeup. Problems, such as clogged pores, premature ageing, dryness or oiliness can become an annoying reality. This is why exfoliating before applying your makeup should be at the top of your list to smoothen and brighten up your skin, while creating an even base for your makeup to grip on to. This is something makeup artist Ruby Vo preaches to her clients, according to IPSY. "Generally, exfoliating 2-3 times a week will help remove dead skin cells and leave your face smooth and ready for flawless makeup,” she says.

When It Comes To Concealer, Less Is More

Makeup artist Kerrie Smart says one of the common mistakes someone with mature skin might make is adding too much concealer. To prevent creasing, she suggests starting with an eye cream for a hydration boost under the eye, then pressing some setting spray onto the same area using your finger. Don't forget to blend! Then add a drop of concealer on the corners of your eyes — rather than in a v-formation under your eye— and blend it out with a concealer brush. Finally, gently tap a small amount of setting spray over the top.

Don't Be Afraid of Shimmer

Some people might be telling you to stay away from shimmer, especially if you have hooded eyes, but makeup artist Erica Taylor says don't listen to them. "You want to pop the bowl of your lid with some shimmer because that is where it's at!" Celebrity makeup artist SJ Froom explains the best way to apply your shimmer is to place it on the edges of your eyes with a fluffy brush after applying a neutral base colour. Then use your finger to sweep it across the lid.

Smokey Eyes? Go For a Light Lip

You may be thinking go big or go home, but think again... If you're playing with the idea of bolder eye makeup, stick to a lighter lip colour like a nude or pink, which keeps the focus on your eyes. This is something Risa Does Makeup illustrates in her glam look below.

Ready to go? Keep your conversation flowing all night long by asking your partner these questions while you're out on the town. Have fun!
