When Mike* and I first met one night at a local pub, I was 22 and in my final year of university, and he was 26 and finishing up culinary school nearby. We had an instant connection: Within a year of dating we moved in together and got married. Instead of going on a honeymoon, though, I moved to New York City for grad school a few days after the wedding and Mike moved across the country to San Francisco for an opportunity to open a restaurant. Needless to say, our friends and family were baffled.

We've been living apart for almost a full school year now. And even though this distance has become our new normal, it doesn't mean it's gotten easier. Here's what a week in my life is like:
