Whether we choose to go blonde, red, pink or even keep it all natural, our hair colour is an essential way in which we express our personalities. However, keeping coloured hair looking vibrant and healthy can be a challenge: sun exposure, heat styling, harsh chemicals in certain hair products and (of course!) the passage of time all work against us. This is where hair products that protect and boost hair colour can come in very handy. Our expert judges from the Prevention Healthy Hair Awards 2023 hairstylist Sue Caires and Prevention beauty editor Cecily-Anna Bennett have tried a whole bunch of products to test whether they deliver the goods: we share their favourite picks below.

A jack of all trades
R+Co Television Perfect Hair Shampoo
Want a shampoo that does it all? Just a little of this colour-safe shampoo goes a long way, adding body and shine, strengthening strands and balancing oils. Both your hair and scalp will be conditioned with babassu seed oil and juniper berry extract.
Make it (purple) rain
Behind every woman with coloured hair is a purple shampoo! And trust us, this is a good one. Its purple formula helps to combat brassy tones and restores health and moisture to the hair. Plus, it smells amazing with organic and natural ingredients like pomegranate, blueberry, fruit extracts and an array of botanical oils.
Perfect for all shades
Moroccanoil Blonde Perfecting Purple Conditioner
Don’t forget your purple conditioner! Hairstylist and Prevention Healthy Hair Awards 2023 judge Sue Caires praises this conditioner’s intensive pigment, which is perfect for all shades of blonde, silver, highlighted hair and everything in between. The blend of argan oil and amino acids works to enhance colour and shine and neutralise yellow and brassy tones with ease. Just leave it in for five minutes and watch the magic happen.
Beach ready
Philip Kingsley Swimcap Water Resistant Mask
If you love getting in the water during the warmer months but hate the damaging effect it has on your hair, this mask is for you. With UV protection included, don’t worry about your coloured hair fading. Simply apply to damp hair before going to the beach or hopping in the pool and you’ll be good to go.
Bright star
Evo Fabuloso Platinum Blonde Colour Boosting Treatment
Three minutes and you're ready! Bring out the bright tint of your blonde hair and step out with soft and shiny strands. “This is a winning product for blonde hair that neutralises brassiness, maintains the appearance of coloured hair and delivers a super-nourishing conditioning treatment,” says Sue.
Grey, grey, go away
Vegamour Gro Ageless Anti-Gray Hair Serum
Need to boost your hair colour? This serum contains peptides to help with that, as well as caffeine to counteract the damage that affects hair following exposure to oxidative stress. Plus, it contains glycoproteins that work to enhance your hair’s shine. Complete with a B vitamin blend, it can help reduce the appearance of greys. Phew, did we leave anything out? “It helps to slow the process of greying hair, gives amazing shine and it’s light enough for everyday use,” says Sue.
The DIY do
Color & Soin Permanent Hair Dye
“Although I’m a long-time devotee of in-salon colour, I do like this permanent box dye – which is the number one DIY dye brand in France,” says Prevention beauty editor and Prevention Healthy Hair Awards 2023 judge Cecily-Anna Bennett. Perfect for an at-home job, you can hydrate your hair and scalp with plant-based oils and proteins. Cecily adds: “It’s deeply pigmented, available in a range of classic colours, covers greys, is free of ammonia and silicones and you get all of that for less than $20!”
A natural wonder
Daily Naturals Protective Leave in Treatment
Protect your locks from the elements with these nourishing treatments. Colour fading? Not today! UV damage? Not your problem anymore! Plus, it’s vegan, silicone free and full of nourishing plant extracts and oils so your hair won’t be feeling greasy or like it’s weighing you down.
