The weather is gorgeous and you’re ready to switch off from everyday life and enjoy your holiday. But does your skincare routine go out the window or does your skin need extra TLC at this time?

We asked Noella Gabriel, global president and co-founder of premium beauty brand Elemis about skincare on holiday.

What are some common beauty concerns on holiday?

It’s time to get outside and enjoy. But what’s fun for you, can be tough on your skin. Common beauty concerns on holiday include dehydration and sensitivity.

We naturally all crave some sunshine. However, too much sun exposure damages the skin. On the surface, you’ll see visible redness, which radiates heat. Beneath the surface, UVA rays will be causing DNA changes on a cellular level, leading to signs of ageing.

Your skin will become dehydrated because of perspiration in hot climates. Our skin is also incredibly sensitive to heat. Hot weather can also strip your skin of its natural oils, making it feel very dry. Seasonal changes cause skin dryness. From the sunshine to the sea, it seems like all the elements are determined to give you dry skin. Hydration is therefore the answer to your summer skincare routine.

How do you tackle these skin concerns?

With so many aspects of summer posing a risk to your skin, it can feel like an impossible task to keep it healthy. Fortunately, there are lots of easy steps you can take to help encourage a soft, supple complexion. Here are my top suggestions.

  • Cleanse your skin daily
  • Regularly reapply SPF (and make sure it’s at least factor 30)
  • Stay in the shade when possible
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat healthy food (especially lots of fruit)
  • Wear comfortable clothes and hats that cover the skin
  • Take cool showers
  • Moisturise daily

Do you do any specific beauty prep before a holiday?

In the weeks leading up to your holiday, create a skincare regime that works for you and leaves your skin feeling and looking brighter. It will soon become a ritual and one that you’ll look forward to at the start and end of each day.

Exfoliate: Exfoliating twice a week leading up to your holiday is a simple addition to your skincare routine, and it’s highly effective for preparation. By removing dead and dry cells, you’ll allow your healthy skin to absorb all the goodness from your chosen products. You’ll be left with supple skin that’s ready to soak up hydration, antioxidants and vitamins before being exposed to the sun.

Focus on hydration: Your skin will undoubtedly feel the effects of going on holiday, even if you follow your skincare routine morning and night. The combination of travelling, missing out on sleep, and exposing yourself to new environments can dehydrate your skin quickly.

Moisturise: Pay extra attention to your skin’s hydration in the days and weeks leading up to your holiday. Make sure to integrate an intensive moisturiser into your regime, preferably one with SPF, to keep your skin feeling hydrated and silky soft.

How can you keep your skin from drying out when flying?

You must prepare for travel, and by this, I mean, no alcohol the night before, dress comfortably and eat lightly. That may sound very boring, but I have learned over the years (having done it the wrong way myself so many times), that it does pay off to prepare!

Follow these top tips to look and feel fresh in-flight and upon arrival:

1. Hydrate

Airless cabins are extremely dehydrating for your skin and lips. Avoid coffee and alcohol and drink at least one and a half litres on long-haul flights to keep skin topped up with hydration.

2. Keep clean

Clean skin is the no. 1 skincare rule, so give your face a deep cleanse to avoid clogged pores and breakouts.

3. Get glowing

If you are on a long-haul flight, sit back and treat yourself to an in-flight facial with a cooling gel mask.

How can we streamline our holiday skincare routine?

Skincare is just as important on holiday as it is as home, if not more so with your skin being subjected to multiple climates and environments. If you only have space for the essentials make sure you include your cleanser, day SPF and night cream – these are foundation of any good skincare routine.
