Depending on which studies you consult, alcohol will either protect your heart and preserve your memory, or it'll raise your risk of cancer and liver disease. (Or maybe all of the above.) While scientists continue to duke it out, most experts say it's OK to enjoy the odd tipple as long as you do so in moderation and make smart choices.
Not sure what to request when you belly up to the bar? Here's what the experts say...
Champagne Spritzer
If the occasion calls for some bubbly, keep it on the light side and reduce the alcohol content by opting for a spritzer. "My go-to is dry champagne with a couple ounces of pomegranate juice, garnished with two strawberries," says dietitian Lori Zanini. "It makes any happy hour feel like a special occasion, while keeping portions in check." Bonus: Pomegranate juice and strawberries are packed with antioxidants.

Wine
"I like a nice French white or a glass of Pinot noir," says nutritionist Leslie Bonci. "I can have a glass or two, I get some health benefits from the phytonutrients like resveratrol in red, and I don't feel deprived or inebriated." Plus, a glass of wine generally has about 300 calories, max, adds Bonci. Just keep an eye on how much your bartender is pouring; one serving of wine is only 5 ounces.
Skinny Moscow Mule
If you love the refreshing taste of this classic copper mug cocktail, you can cut the carbs by making a slight tweak to the recipe. "I order it with vodka, but instead of just adding ginger beer, I do a splash of ginger beer and a splash of club soda, topped with a splash of lime juice," says nutritionist Jennifer McDaniel. "It's refreshing and more indulgent than your plain vodka soda."

Dark Beer
While it isn't the lowest calorie choice on the menu, a dark, rich beer is extremely satisfying. And it can take a while to finish it, so you're less likely to go back for another round. "Think of it like the difference between eating a big cheap chocolate bar or a smaller piece of high quality chocolate," says nutritionist Jenna Braddock. "I savor it and rarely feel like I need another drink after because one is enough." For an extra treat, try a coffee-flavored porter or stout.
Vodka Spritzer
Vodka with juice such as cranberry can be delicious, but the juice is loaded with sugar and kJs. So order a vodka and soda instead and top it with just a splash of cranberry juice. "This is like a cranberry spritzer with just the right amount of fizz and flavor," says clinical nutritionist Marina Chaparro.
