Kris Jenner is the mother of five of the most famous women in Hollywood and she's leading by example in the fight for women's health. In two Instagram posts the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star shared Wednesday, she advocated for her female followers to go get checked for breast cancer.
"I spent my morning at Cedars Sinai Medical Center with this little baby today... just reminding everyone to go get their Mammogram!!" Jenner, 62, captioned a photo of a 3D mammography machine. "So important and can save lives. My Mom MJ is a breast cancer survivor and so are dozens of my friends. Do this in honor of your loved ones I know all of us have someone in our lives who have dealt with cancer. Love you guys!!!"
Jenner then went a step further by sharing that she also had a breast ultrasound. Breast ultrasounds are used to get an even deeper look at breast changes, such as dense breast tissue or lumps that can be felt but not seen on a mammogram. Jenner did not say whether she found any irregularities, but told her followers she just wanted to "double triple check."
"This took about 15 minutes each side and gets under the arm, breast and nearer the chest in the middle," she wrote. "Didn’t hurt at all just some pressure...and very thorough...some of you mentioned even more extensive testing so i thought i would share. #informationispower#bilateralbreastultrasound."
BreastScreen Australia recommends mammograms every two years for women aged 50–74 years (Like Jenner).
However, it is suggested that all women-despite their age-become familiar with the known benefits, limitations, and potential harms linked to breast cancer screening. According to the Breast Cancer Network Australia, about one in eight Australian women will develop invasive breast cancer by the time they turn 85, so Jenner using through her platform of over 20 million followers to raise awareness is definitely a positive step toward hopefully reducing that statistic.
