- Martha Stewart responded to critics who said she had plastic surgery prior to shooting her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover.
- Others insisted the photos were overly retouched.
- Stewart is opening up about the accusations, and her thoughts on Botox and fillers.
By now, you’ve probably seen Martha Stewart’s Sports Illustrated cover that took the internet by storm. At 81, the lifestyle mogul made history as the swimsuit edition’s oldest cover model, and all week, she has fielded a flood of (mostly positive) reactions to the glamorous shoot. But, of course, there were a group of naysayers who insisted she had plastic surgery prior to the shoot. Now, Stewart is opening up about Botox, fillers, and plastic surgery.
In regards to going under the knife, the star kept it short: “It’s not true,” she told Variety.
What is true is that she did a few extra routines to prep for the debut, none of which included going under the knife. “I had my regular facials but maybe more frequently and I also got a spray tan,” she said. “And I’m not a hairy person, but I got a complete body wax.” She added that she also watched what she ate (temporarily eliminating bread and pasta, she told Today), cut out alcohol, and increased the frequency of her Pilates workouts to three times a week.
“I’ve had absolutely no plastic surgery whatsoever,” Stewart continued. “I have very healthy, good hair. I drink green juice every day. I take my vitamins. I eat very healthfully. I have very good skin doctors. I’m very careful in the sun. I wear hats and I wear sunblock every single day.”
She added that she even stays away from Botox. “Every now and then there are certain fillers that I can do for a little line here or there, but I hate Botox. It’s a weird thing for me. I really and truly don’t do a lot,” she said.
Even then, other critics insisted the Sports Illustrated photos must’ve been majorly retouched. “They’re not [retouched]. They are incredibly accurate pictures. I was really pleased that there was not much airbrushing,” Stewart explained.
Throughout her entire career, with her entertaining and lifestyle empire, Stewart has delivered a consistent message: that an elevated experience is not just possible, but achievable for everyone. She hopes this cover is just another example – that anyone can look and feel good at any age. “Age is not the determining factor in terms of friendship or in terms of success, but what people do, how people think, how people act, that’s what’s important and not your age,” she told Sports Illustrated.
All of the filters and cosmetic procedures in the world couldn’t emulate what really makes Stewart glow, which is simply presence. “You have to feel good and be in the moment,” she said on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2021. That’s her number one tip for being in front of the camera. And it’s safe to say it’s working for her, so we’re taking notes.
