- Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have been married for nearly a decade—and three daughters later, the pair is just as happy as they were at the start of their relationship.
- Their secret to a happy marriage is so simple—but so important.
- “Falling in love is great, but do you like each other?” the Free Guy star continued. “That’s kinda the question you gotta ask yourself, you know, going into it.”
After nine years of marriage, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are still one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples. Whether they’re trolling one another (trading playful jabs) on social media or lighting up the red carpet at each other’s premieres, the pair never misses a chance to show just how deep their affection runs.
But how do Reynolds, 45, and Lively, 34, keep the spark alive after nearly a decade? It all comes down to a deep, mutual friendship, Reynolds said in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight USA.
“We don’t take each other too seriously, but we’re also friends,” the Free Guy star revealed. “Falling in love is great, but do you like each other? That’s kinda the question you gotta ask yourself, you know, going into it.”
For Reynolds, the answer is clear: “We’ve always liked each other. We grow together. We learn from each other,” he continued. “So yeah, I’m lucky to have a buddy in that.”

Lively feels the same way. “We’ve never gone a week without seeing each other,” the Gossip Girl star told Marie Claire USA in 2014. “The best part is when we turn off our phones and just talk and hang out. He’s my best, best friend. What do you do with your best friend? You do nothing.”
Reynolds also loves to make Lively laugh—often through social media posts at the expense of both parties. During a Wednesday interview on the Today show USA, he offered a little more insight into why he ribs his wife so often. “You’re an internet troll,” Savannah Guthrie told Reynolds while discussing his relationship with Lively. “A little bit, yeah, but only when it comes to those most precious to me,” the actor responded.
“We’ve always liked each other. We grow together.”
The couple tied the knot in 2012 and share three daughters, James, 6; Inez, 5; and Betty, 2. Although life with three young kids can be “absolute mayhem,” Reynolds said on Today USA, he couldn’t imagine life without his wife and daughters. “I would not have it any other way,” he told Access Hollywood this week. “We love having our girls.”
“It can’t be said enough … you’re the heart and soul of every moment this family shares,” Reynolds wrote in a heartfelt (and surprisingly earnest) Mother’s Day post in Lively’s honour, earlier this year. “I’m grateful for the light and for the kindness you smuggle into each and every second of our lives. I see you in the eyes of our children … Every laugh. Every blink and every thoughtful moment of vulnerability.”
We're not crying, you're crying. Their love is one for the ages, and we can't wait to see what the two share about each other as time progresses.
Here’s to another decade of friendship between Lively and Reynolds—now excuse us while we grab a tissue.
