Makeup can start behaving differently over time. Concealer creases faster, powder sits on dry patches, lipstick feathers and a base that used to look polished can suddenly look heavy by midday. Most women do not change their routine overnight, but skin does change gradually, which is why those small “why does this look off?” moments start stacking up.

That is where a few smart product choices can make makeup feel easy again, especially over 60. Makeup artist Laura Geller says the goal is not more coverage or more steps. It is choosing formulas that glide, stay comfortable and sit on top of the skin instead of settling into lines.

Here are the five product types she rates as worth keeping in your makeup bag, plus why they matter for mature skin.

1. A baked base for a smoother-looking finish

Geller recommends baked formulas for a natural-looking base, especially when skin feels drier or makeup tends to settle into fine lines. “Baked formulas start as creams, so they glide over the skin instead of settling into wrinkles or clinging to dry patches, giving a smooth, natural finish,” she explains.

The takeaway is less about the label and more about the texture. Cream-to-powder style formulas often look softer on mature skin than heavier liquids or thick powders, especially when applied in light layers.

2. A primer that helps makeup sit on top of skin

Geller is direct about how much primer matters once skin texture changes. “My primer is a non-negotiable if you’re over 60,” Geller says. “It creates a smooth barrier so makeup sits on top of the skin instead of sinking into lines and helps everything last longer.”

The key benefit of primer is not just longevity. It can also help prevent makeup from breaking up across the day, particularly around areas where fine lines are more noticeable.

3. Hydrating lip colour that stays comfortable

Mature lips often lose moisture and definition over time, which can make lipstick feel drier or more prone to feathering. Geller says hydration matters just as much for lips as it does for the rest of the face. “Lips tend to lose moisture with age, so hydration is key to preventing feathering while keeping lips soft and comfortable,” she explains.

A softer, hydrating lip formula can also give a more natural finish than very matte products, which can emphasise dryness.

4. A brow product that adds shape and hold

Brows can thin and lighten with age, which changes the balance of the face. Geller says filling them can make an immediate difference. “Brows naturally thin and gray over time, and filling them in instantly frames the face and creates a more lifted, polished look,” she says.

Look for a brow product that combines colour with hold so brows stay in place without needing multiple steps.

5. Volumising mascara to open up the eyes

Lashes can also thin over time, which can make eyes look less defined. Geller says mascara can help bring the eye area back into focus. “Lashes thin as we age and our eyes become more sallow, so a good volumizing mascara helps open up the eyes and gives a wide-awake, lifted effect,” Geller says.

A volumising formula can add definition quickly, especially when paired with a soft, even base and a lifted brow shape.
