Dr Fatima Khan, a highly skilled menopause and perimenopause doctor, has found that there’s no point taking a pill for menopausal symptoms without addressing your underlying health. Over decades of treating menopausal women, she has developed the fundamental pillars every woman needs to be aware of in order to thrive during this transition.
“Over the years I realised that there'll be some woman, when you give them HRT, they still feeling quite ordinary and have changes in mood, weight and energy and sleep. So you've got to look at stress management, sleep, social connections, movement, what they eating, and their mindset.
“Unless you address all those domains, women aren't going to feel their best. They're just not going to have the energy, the motivation or the mindset to do that."
In this episode of the podcast Thriving in Menopause, Dr Khan discusses practical and specific daily habits to ease stress, support better sleep, ways to boost energy and feel more positive.
“Consider midlife as a window of opportunity for a life audit,” says Dr Khan. “Whatever you've been doing in your 20s, 30s, 40s, that's now the past. You've got to go through each domain in life and say, ‘Okay, what can I do to improve the quality of my life now?’
“I always say that it's important to manage the menopause for two reasons: Short term is quality of life, your functioning at work, functioning at home and in relationships. But also, we know unhealthy habits predispose women to chronic disease. And women in Australia live on average, 30-40 years post menopause. And if you don't address your food, your movement [fitness], your sleep, your stress now, you are not going to be able to prevent those illnesses.”
