Some love mushrooms, some would rather go without – but just between us, the latter are missing out! You may not realise it, but these (sometimes) tiny veggies are full of goodness that cannot be denied.

Let's talk through just a few of the many health benefits that are waiting inside mushrooms.

They give you more for less

While mushrooms are low in kilojoules, they will make you feel fuller for longer. In addition to that, they also contain a number of vitamins and high levels of antioxidants. Aside from being the only non-animal product to contain Vitamin D (fun fact – they increase their vitamin D levels naturally using the power of the sun!), a single serving can also provide over 20% of your daily B vitamins, according to Australian Mushroom Growers.

They may decrease your breast cancer risk

Mushroom lovers can rejoice at this revelation! Mushrooms are full of compounds that can protect us from breast cancer, such as β-glucans and lectins. According to a 2021 study, eating just 18 grams of mushrooms can lower the risk of breast cancer by 45% compared to those who don't eat mushrooms.

Put down the salt!

You don't need that extra dash of salt when you plate up a mushroom feast. The rich umami flavour matures as the mushroom ages, meaning the need for salt is non-existent. Thinking twice before overindulging in salt is a good thing, because too much of this simple seasoning could lead to a premature death.

Fire up your grill or stove top – here are three yummy recipes to help you add more mushrooms to your meal plan.
