If you’re feeling stressed or anxious, you’re not alone. More than 40 per cent of Aussies recently polled said they are currently feeling stressed all or most of the time. Such high anxiety can play havoc with our health in surprising ways. This can include changes in our gut bacteria, which in turn may influence our mood, explains dietitian Susan Bowerman, Senior Director of Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training at Herbalife Nutrition.
Stress can even impact our ability to maintain a healthy weight with the high levels of stress hormone, cortisol, linked to weight gain. It can also play havoc with getting a good night’s sleep.
It’s important to find ways to manage our stress and anxiety levels naturally. For some people that may be through meditation or exercise. Taking the right herbs can also play a part. “Herbs have been used since ancient times for their health benefits,” says Susan. “Lemon balm is a lemon-scented herb that is said to soothe symptoms of stress, help you relax and is associated with improvements in mood. Herbs such as lavender may calm the mind, passion-flower may aid relaxation to boost overall wellness and chamomile is believed to induce sedation and have a calming effect.”
Herbal teas are an easy way to reap these benefits, says Susan. And having a simple bedtime ritual can make a difference. “By lowering stress levels in the evening before bed, many people could improve the duration and quality of their sleep, optimise their gut health and lower their stress hormone levels which supports weight management.”
3 natural ways to relax before bedtime:
- Take a warm bath or shower just before bed
- Listen to music or a guided meditation
