Gingerbread houses have been hailed as the banana bread of late 2020 - Instagram is crammed with posts with everyone from celebrities to talented home chefs sharing their creations.

With COVID-19 and winter keeping everyone at home overseas, there's been a lot of Christmas baking going on. Here are some of our favourites:

Actress Reese Witherspoon created the most amazing gingerbread mansion with her kids, Ava, 21, Deacon 16 and Tennessee, 8.

"One of my favorite things about this time of year is decorating gingerbread houses with my kids, well ... ok ... we mostly just eat the candy," Witherspoon, 44, wrote in the photo's caption.

We love US TV personality Lauren Conrad’s gingerbread house hack – she wrote on Instagram: “Tip: if you don’t feel like baking, Graham Crackers make fine little houses.”

Madonna posted videos of herself decorating gingerbread houses with her twins, Estere and Stella.

In one clip, she asked the pair, "How much of the decorations have you eaten? That's the important bit though."

"I had a little bite," one admitted, before the other agreed as she popped a mini marshmallow in her mouth, "Me too. Like this one!"

After Madonna said, "I told you guys not to eat the decorations," they backtracked and one cheekily said with a grin on her face, "We don't eat any of them, we only look at them."

Even the Queen has been showing off the gingerbread houses that are made in the Royal kitchens via Twitter.

Michelle Wibowo, an award-winning artist and cake designer, has taken things to the next level and created a gingerbread replica of Kevin McCallister’s house from Home Alone.

The replica took more than 300 hours to complete and was commissioned by Disney+ to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary. Wibowo’s creation included 63 trees, 33 windows, 14 pizza boxes, and six lamp posts.

A little closer to home, one of Australia's most recognised pastry chefs, Anna Polyviou, has put her own stamp on the trend for Good Food.

"I love making the experience of making the gingerbread house a journey," says Polyviou. "You have to take the kids with you when you shop for the lollies, let them visualise how they want the house to look and then let them select the things they need to create it."

"I've gone crazy before with design, but really all you need is a roof and walls. You let your imagination run wild with the decorations."

Kim and Khloe Kardashian (gingerbread house pictured main) have shared jaw-dropping snow-capped houses with wreaths in every window, though we’re pretty sure they just bought rather than made them.

If you needed an excuse to buy rather than bake, a Woolworths customer has shared photo of the disturbing find she made in her gingerbread house.

Shopper Katie wrote on Facebook: “Only in Australia, only in #2020. Buy a readymade gingerbread house they said, it’ll be easier than building one they said!”
