You’ve heard of rosemary oil for hair growth—but what about rosemary water?
The herb is making waves online as a star ingredient for thicker, healthier strands. If you’re not keen on applying oil to an already grease-prone scalp, rosemary water could be a lighter alternative. And the best part? Learning how to make rosemary water for hair is surprisingly simple.
While it hasn’t been widely studied for hair health, rosemary has a long history of benefits. Below, experts explain how to make rosemary water for hair and why this kitchen staple could be just as good for your scalp as it is for flavouring your favourite soup.
Rosemary water benefits
Rosemary water may offer similar advantages to other rosemary-infused hair products, and it can be stored in a spray bottle for easy daily use. Experts say it helps improve blood flow to the scalp, “which encourages hair follicles to function more efficiently,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr Christina Han.
That increased nourishment supports stronger, healthier strands that are more resistant to breakage and damage, explains hair transplant surgeon Dr Ross Kopelman. Rosemary “also contains compounds like ursolic acid, which can help reduce inflammation on the scalp, and antioxidants that protect hair from damage,” he adds.
Some studies have shown rosemary to be just as effective as minoxidil—the active ingredient in Rogaine—when it comes to treating hair loss. It works by blocking dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to thinning and shedding, Dr Kopelman says. These qualities make rosemary “a great natural option for promoting hair health,” he notes. That said, more clinical studies are needed before it replaces prescription treatments.
How to make rosemary water for hair
Dr Kopelman shares a simple DIY recipe to make rosemary water at home:
- Bring two to three cups of water to a boil.
- Add a handful of fresh or dried rosemary leaves and let it simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Remove from heat and allow it to cool completely.
- Strain the leaves and pour the infused water into a spray bottle for easy application.
- Store in the fridge for up to a week.
How to use rosemary water for hair
There are a few ways to incorporate rosemary water into your haircare routine. Dr Kopelman recommends using it as a leave-in spray or as a rinse after shampooing. No need to wash it out afterwards.
Whichever method you prefer, he says the key is to apply it to a clean scalp. “This helps the solution absorb properly,” he explains. Massage the scalp gently for a few minutes after applying to stimulate blood flow and support hair growth.
How often should I use rosemary water for hair?
“You can spray it directly onto your scalp once or twice a day, focusing on areas where you want to boost growth,” says Dr Kopelman.
He notes that consistency and patience are essential. “Hair growth takes time. You may start to notice changes such as less shedding or fuller strands in about three to six months,” he says. Improvements in scalp health—like less itching or irritation—can show up sooner, sometimes within a few weeks.
“Everyone’s hair responds differently, but sticking with a routine gives you the best chance of seeing long-term results,” Dr Kopelman adds.
