If you’re over 40 and your waist band is getting a little tighter, but you’re eating the same way you always did, you’re not alone. It can be due to the changes that start to happen during perimenopause, explains dietitian Susie Burrell. Until this point in our adult lives, the hormone oestrogen has played a role in protecting us against the kind of belly fat men are prone to, but as our oestrogen levels decline during perimenopause, “we lose that little bit of insurance,” Susie explains.
And there are other factors, too. “Life at this age is so busy, you're juggling a million things, and often your time is not your own. So we often don't have that freedom to spend hours in the gym, There's a number of factors working against us,” she says.
It’s a normal reaction to this expanding waistline to think, ‘Oh, I have to diet!’ But that’s often the first mistake, says Susie. “When I speak to clients, they're always saying, ‘I've gone off track, I've eaten too much’ and they're focused on what they're doing wrong. Whereas I like to focus on the foundation (of what to do right).” Once that’s in place, says Susie, women feel more energy, they’re no longer hungry, they’re calmer (and more regular too!). In this episode of our podcast Thriving in Menopause, Susie discusses what that food foundation should be at midlife and how our nutrition needs are different now than in our 20s and 30s. Plus, she shares some simple hacks to eating well without a lot of effort. Don’t miss Susie’s advice.
